SCRATCHA DVA - NATTY/GANJA (HYPERDUB)

Most of you will know Scratcha as the entertaining host of Rinse FM’s ‘Grimey Breakfast’ but he’s been keeping a fairly low profile as a producer. A few months ago his ‘Jelly Roll’ EP was well received indeed, providing a good intro to this release on legendary Hyperdub, that has successfully removed itself from the unfortunate and unfair ‘dubstep/wonky’ stigma that has been hangin around in the past few years. ‘Natty’ and ‘Ganja’ comply with the winning funky formula already established by Cooly G and although slightly basic at some points, have moments of originality. For lovers of funky house, these will go down a treat and although we found ‘Ganja’ a bit too close to ‘Township Funk’ and its rasta vocal samples slightly redundant, we recommend ‘Natty’ for everyone’s DJ bag. With its low slung tropical percussion, bubbly pads and slick basslines, the tune wouldn’t be out of place in a minimal or even ragga club.
