INVASION vs SHACKLETON – WIZARDS IN DUB (LESS MUSIC)

Wizards in Dub is a two part remix release and a Less Music first. Less Music joins This is Music and More Music as a more leftfield label, releasing the stuff that’s simply too obscure for its two somewhat more hyperactive older sisters.
The two originals for these reworks come from Invasion’s admirable album The Master Alchemist straight from a tape of parts he sent over to Shackleton straight after the release (yes, tape!). Having these dubs released shortly after Shackleton’s mindboggling album on Perlon will no doubt be a good selling point for Invasion and deservedly so - the remixes are a pleasant yet dark blend of atmospheric synth pads, minimalist chopped up vocals and reverbs that would make King Tubby smile. Part 1 is entirely beat-less, a haunting Burialesque melody that could well be mistaken for EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) - definitely one to confuse the clubbers or scare the kids. Part 2 introduces subtle hi-hats and sounds even more nightmarish with a narcotic didgeridoo-like synth. Not to be played in an Amsterdam coffee shop!
These remixes are experimental and club unfriendly however very cinematic and suitable for solo moments of self-reflection. Not Shackleton’s best but certainly a promising start for Less Music and a brownie point for having the courage to dive straight into heavily experimental waters with their first release.
