PATCHWORK PIRATES: SUPER-KINETIC ASS SLAPPIN’ SWAGGER!

There are lots of DJ crews around the UK, each claiming an original spin on their chosen genre, each promoting their own parties and each representing there little spot of ground to the best of their means. However, if you’re a Patchwork Pirate, you introduce any genre you like to the mix, you take risks to represent the best unheard artists across the globe and you have a worldwide network of like-minded people backing you up all the way. We caught up with the PP posse’s Terence Teh to get the down low on all things naughtical…
HYPONIK.COM: When can we expect some more next level mixtape badness from yourselves?
TERENCE TEH: Pretty soon. We’ve got a Rhythm Incursions mix in the pipeline and another one for the killer ManyBrain blog too. While you’re waiting, there are three mixes that you can download from the PP MySpace. Our recent 60 min opus for the Ninja’s Solid Steel radio show; secondly, the mix for our legendary Thugs & Hugs jam at Sonar last year; and last, but by no means least, a very special Delicious Vinyl 20th anniversary mix for Dazed.
H: If Jack Sparrow was a DJ, would he come with the fresh shit?
TT: Nah, he’d be too busy knocking back the grog to give a shit.
H: Was Black Beard the original gangster?
TT: Nope - Cut-Throat Jake from the Captain Pugwash cartoon series was the OG.
H: What can we expect you to be airing at Hyp!Hyp!Hyp! this Friday? Anything special?
TT Big mama ass-slappin’ drums, basslines that make your trousers wobble, and more swagger than Weezy, Jeezy and Yeezy combined. Oh and most likely some Twista and T-Pain joints. WHUT! WHUT! WHUT!

H: What’s the deal with production work – would we see you guys in the studio?
TT: The lanky one has been beavering away for the past year on various cataplectic club jams and assorted beat naps. A crunked up Ludacris/Underworld joint leaked out last year and went triple platinum on the blogs and there’s a rowdy Gemmy/Pimp C re-edit doing the rounds right now. Hold tight for the new-new ish though - soon come.
H: Thugs and Hugs is now 2 – are you proud parents?
TT: Yup. Not only of the London parties though. We remember being at Sonar in 2005 and thinking how dope it would be to throw a party there… which we did in 2008 with a ton of heavyweight friends. Have to shout the unsung heroes - our ever patient, one stop design genius James Hamilton (www.thechipfactory.co.uk) and our logo king from our NYC KDU fam – Aerosyn-Lex.
H: T&H seems to pick up on a lot of artists that are just bubbling under – do you see the function of hosting T&H as a means to bring new music to London?
TT: Definitely. Thugs & Hugs hosts music we personally love and we’re proud to sort shit out and bring it to London before most. We have a worldwide network. There’s art and film and even chefs like NYC’s Dante Fried Chicken (though, he is WAY more than just a chef) that we love and want to throw parties and events with. So we do.
H: Do you think London promoters represent new music as much as they could do?
TT: If we wanted to make a ton of money throwing nights we wouldn’t do what we do - put on who we wanna hear and take a risk on, when most people have no clue who these dudes are. BUT they will. Look at our track record. Of course there are new and exciting music promoters out there. But we are in London, and there is a lot of cool shit around, which obviously means people book a lot of shit.
H: Music, fashion, art – which would you choose and why?
TT: Music and art first, fashion second. Why? No panties and jeans, so necessary.
H: What does the future hold for Patchwork Pirates?
TT: We’re asking ourselves the very same question.
Keep your eyes peeled for the next couple of mixes and check out the Myspace here.
