CHEST CAVITY BASS: DJ DISTANCE

Having been a driving force of the dubstep scene since before it’s ‘official’ birth in 2004, Distance’s work and focus on the more experimental, darker sounds of dubstep have constantly pushed the sound into new territory.
With the release of his sophomore album last year on Planet Mu, Distance continued to push the envelope with a sprawling yet at times minimal journey into atmospherics textures and low slung bass weight. Ahead of his set at Hyp!Hyp!Hyp! on the 27th March, we thought we’d ask him a few random questions on dubstep, live shows and chest cavity bass pressure.

Hyponik.com: Having invariably had your music described as dark, moody and metallic, do you think it’s all 3 of those things? What other 3 words would you use to describe your sound and why?

Distance: I would have to say

Intelligent; I try to push things forward with every beat and I put a lot of time into detail.
Energetic; some of my tracks are all about energy, getting people moving and having a drop which hits your chest like a ton of bricks.
Organic; I use a lot of live sounds and distortion to try and recreate the warmth you get from live instruments.

H:What do you prefer – pub, club or studio?

D: I need all three, but the studio is where it all starts so I would have to go with that.

H: What projects do you have in the pipeline?

D: I have a few interesting remixes coming up, plus I’m in the middle of planning the next 3 Chestplate releases - look out for more Deleted Scenes too!

H: Do you have any plans to put a live show together, or do you prefer to stick to the decks?

D: I have no plans at the moment but I would love to do a live show. My problem is I cant do things half heartedly - there would have to end up being a Distance band with a drummer, bass player and guitarist.
I don’t really look at Ableton as live really. If I see the word live next to someone’s name on a flyer I would expect to see musicians on stage, not a guy behind a laptop.

H: What’s going on with your Chestplate label?

D: Well the 5th release came out in December which has done really well and CHST006 should be released in a month or two.

H: What dubplates can we expect to hear you airing at Hyp!Hyp!Hyp! on the 27th?

D: I’ve got loads of new material to play, plus some new remixes I’ve just finished. No doubt there will be some fresh dmz, Pinch, Cyrus, Benga and Skream. It’s gonna be heavy basically.
